Vitiligo is a skin pigmentation condition that causes patches of skin to lose their colour. This happens because the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour, are destroyed.

What does Vitiligo look like?

Vitiligo commonly present as complete loss of pigment in single or multiple areas of skin, with characteristic chalk- or milky-white colour. Hair in the affected areas, including the scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, and beard, may turn white.

How is Vitiligo diagnosed?

Vitiligo is typically diagnosed clinically. Blood tests may be performed to rule out possible associated autoimmune diseases.

Treatment options for Vitiligo

There is no cure for vitiligo, but treatments can help improve the appearance of the skin. Treatment options may vary depending on the severity and location of the vitiligo. This includes:

General Measures:

  • Cosmetic camouflage of the white area with waterproof makeup, self-tanning lotions. Microtattooing can be useful for small stable areas of vitiligo.

  • Minimise skin injury: wear protective clothing.

  • Sun protection is a MUST: White skin can only burn on exposure to ultraviolet radiation, it cannot tan & Sunburn may cause vitiligo to spread.

  • Diet: some evidence about the benefit of healthy diet, rich in anti-inflammatory & antioxidants. Although low but some evidence on Supplements like alpha-lipoic acid, Ginko bioloba and Fern extract may improve the response to phototherapy.

Medical Therapy

Surgical Treatments: Active repigmentation with surgical techniques.

Depigmentation therapy: In some cases, medications can be used to lighten the surrounding skin to match the depigmented areas.
