Types of Hyperhidrosis
Primary (Idiopathic) Hyperhidrosis: This is the most common type. It usually affects:
Palms (hands): Making it difficult to grip objects, write, or shake hands.
Soles (feet): Leading to sweaty feet, unpleasant odour, and difficulty with footwear.
Armpits (axillae): Causing excessive sweating that can soak through clothes and be embarrassing.
Secondary Hyperhidrosis: This type is caused by an underlying medical condition including drugs or endocrine diseases.
What causes Primary Hyperhidrosis?
The exact cause of primary hyperhidrosis is unknown (Idiopathic), but it's likely due to overactive sweat glands, contributing factors include genetics, physical and emotional factors.
What are the symptoms of Hyperhidrosis?
Excessive sweating: Sweating more than is considered normal for the situation.
Social and emotional distress: Embarrassment, anxiety, and low self-esteem due to excessive sweating.

How is hyperhidrosis diagnosed?

Treatment options for Hyperhidrosis
There are several treatment options available for hyperhidrosis:
Lifestyle Changes:
Wear breathable fabrics: Choose cotton clothing and avoid synthetic materials.
Use antiperspirants: Apply antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride to affected areas.
Maintain good hygiene: Wash affected areas regularly and thoroughly.
Medications:
Topical antiperspirants: Clinical strength antiperspirants or Prescription compound creams.
Oral medications: In some cases, medications may be prescribed to reduce sweating.
Medical Procedures:
Iontophoresis: This involves passing a mild electrical current through water in which the hands or feet are immersed.
Neuromodulator injections: Injections into the affected areas can block nerve signals to the sweat glands.
Approved for hyperhidrosis affecting the armpits.
The injections reduce or stop sweating for three to six months with noticeable improvement in 1-2 weeks.
Under Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) guidelines, patients who meet eligibility criteria can receive up to three subsidised injection treatments for axillary hyperhidrosis per year (minimum of 4 months apart)
Surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be an option.
