Learn more about Psoriasis

What causes Psoriasis?

The exact cause of psoriasis isn't fully understood, but it involves a complex interaction between the immune system and genetics.

Factors that may trigger or worsen psoriasis include:

  • Streptococcal throat infections

  • Skin injuries, such as cuts or sunburn

  • Dry skin

  • Obesity, smoking, and excessive alcohol

  • Certain medications

  • Stressful events

What does Psoriasis look like?

  • Red, scaly patches: The most common symptom is the appearance of red, scaly patches on the skin. These patches may vary in size and location.

  • Itch and Pain: Itch may be mild or severe, leading to scratching and thickened skin.

  • Discoloration: Post-inflammatory hypo- or hyperpigmentation that may fade over several months.

Patients with psoriasis are more likely than others to have associated health conditions such as:

  • Joint or back pain (psoriatic arthritis and spondylarthritis)

  • Inflammatory bowel disease.

  • Uveitis (eye inflammation).

  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Types of Psoriasis

  • Plaque psoriasis: The most common type, characterized by raised, red patches covered with silvery scales.

  • Guttate psoriasis: Sudden onset of many small, drop-like spots. Often triggered by an infection.

  • Inverse psoriasis: Affects skin folds, such as under the breasts, in the groin, and in the armpits.

  • Pustular psoriasis: Causes pus-filled blisters on the skin.

  • Erythrodermic psoriasis: A severe form that covers most of the body with a red, peeling rash.

How is psoriasis diagnosed?

Psoriasis is usually diagnosed clinically. Skin biopsy may be considered if diagnosis not clear.

Treatment options for Psoriasis

There's no cure for psoriasis, but treatment can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Treatment options include:

  • Topical medications: Creams and ointments containing corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, salicylic acid, and coal tar- these reduce scaling and inflammation.

  • Light therapy (Phototherapy): Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can help slow down skin cell growth.

  • Systemic medications: Immunosuppressive drugs or Biological Therapies and Oral Small Molecules to target specific parts of the immune system.

  • Biological Therapies or Oral Small Molecules: Target specific parts of the immune system (e.g., TNF-alpha inhibitors, IL-17 inhibitors, IL-23 inhibitors).

  • Lifestyle measures: Managing stress, smoking cessation and maintaining a healthy weight by balanced diet & regular exercise.

  • Skin Care: Use gentle cleansers and moisturisers to keep the skin hydrated; avoid products that cause irritation.
