What Causes Rosacea?
The exact cause of rosacea isn't fully understood, but it likely involves a combination of factors, including:
Genetics: Some people are more prone to developing rosacea.
Blood vessels: Blood vessels in the face may become enlarged and easily dilated.
Immune system: The immune system may overreact to certain triggers.
Environmental factors: Sun exposure, extreme temperatures, and certain foods, drugs or drinks can trigger rosacea flare-ups.
What are the Symptoms of Rosacea?
Symptoms of rosacea can vary from person to person and may include:
Persistent Facial Redness: Redness that resembles a blush or sunburn that doesn't go away.
Flushing: Frequent episodes of facial flushing, similar to blushing.
Visible Blood Vessels: Tiny blood vessels may become visible on the face.
Inflammatory Bumps and Pimples: Small red bumps and pus-filled pimples may appear.
Thickened Skin: In severe cases, the skin may thicken and appear swollen this is most seen on the nose (rhinophyma).
Eye Symptoms: Dryness, irritation, stinging, burning, and sensitivity to light.
How is Rosacea diagnosed?
Rosacea is usually diagnosed clinically. Skin biopsy may be considered if diagnosis not clear.
Treatment Options for Rosacea
There is no cure for rosacea, but treatments can help manage symptoms and improve your quality of life. Treatment options include:
Lifestyle Changes:
Sun protection: Use SPF50+, broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, and by covering up with a hat.
Avoid triggers: Identify and avoid foods, drinks, and other triggers that worsen your symptoms.
Gentle skin care: Use mild cleansers and avoid harsh soaps and scrubbing.
Medications:
Topical medications: Creams and gels to reduce inflammation such as topical antibiotics (metronidazole, clindamycin, or erythromycin), Topical azelaic acid or Ivermectin.
Oral medications: Antibiotics or isotretinoin for severe cases other medications may be used to control inflammation.
Procedures:
Vascular laser treatments for reducing redness and visible blood vessels (telangiectasia)
Ablative laser for rhinophyma (thickened skin on the nose).
